Why I can't eat pork......

When I was a little girl, our family raised pigs...
we usually only had one or two at a time. NEVER did it occur to me why.... until...
My dad sold Suzie.
I was heartbroken, she was my friend!

A few weeks later, at dinner.... yup you guessed it...
right in the middle of pork chops... my brother Bart said...

"PLEASE PASS SUZIE!"

The smell of pork chops or pork roast cooking makes me gag...lol
My brother's ( all three) favorite thing to do during family dinners is to snort,
or ask for Suzie, and watch me turn green!

In honor of poor Suzie   RIP  It's pork week on my blog :)
You won't want to miss out... I have a series ready that's too cute.

Poor Suzie! My great-aunt had a similar story about why she couldn't eat chicken. My grandmother had chased her around with a chicken part when they were young girls, and she never ate chicken after that. She cooked a mean fried chicken, but she NEVER ate it! LOL - siblings can be so mean to each other.

I had an uncle who named his beef cattle Hamburger and Hot Dog, just so his kids wouldn't have that kind of issue. It was weird to me, who just didn't want to think about WHERE my hamburger came from.

Thanks for the cute images!

Well, I am happy to know that I am not the only one with a story like this ... my family ate my pig when I was 8. I went to be hungry and still don't eat pork. Thanks for the cute piggies! Norma W

LOL...(not laughing at you Nikki) I don't eat pork for a similar reason. My grandparents raised pigs and one summer we went to visit them and played with a pig we named Kermit. By that following Winter my grandfather had sent us a bundle of bacon. My mom told us it was Kermit. lol

You poor girl (and poor Suzie, too!) Like someone said, above, "that's why we don't make friends with our food" or, better yet, "that's why we don't make food from our friends!" ;) I had pet turtles as a kid (one is still going strong at 35!) and people's jokes about turtle soup gave me awful nightmares (I always pictured their little decapitated heads (or would that be decorpitated?) floating in a bowl along with the alphabet noodles!) which probably was the first sign that I'd grow up to be vegan (16 years this fall...been vegetarian nearly 20 years). It must have done the same to my brothers...or maybe it was their pet birds? My mom still wonders how she ended up giving birth to a litter of vegans! ;)

We always named our calves. After butchering, we always asked for beef by name. We must have been warped from birth! :D

Our daughter raised pigs for 4-H. The first year she cried when we didn't bring one market pig home. We decided to butcher her second one when she was at school to save her the trauma. Then she was mad because she wanted to see where the bacon and pork chops came from. Can't win!

Thank you for Suzie.
