More babbling....lol.
When I was 4, my mother and I were on our way to exchange some gifts that I had gotten
for my birthday. I was riding in the front seat (no seat belts were required then either), and telling my mom about a new TV show that I had watched..... anyone remember "The land of the Lost"?
Anywho..... As I was talking I went to roll down the window, and instead I grabbed the door handle.
The door flung open, taking me with it. Somehow my mother had managed to grab my arm. I remember looking down and boy was I running fast! Eventually my arm slipped from her hand and I landed in the road, hitting my head. I remember being in the ambulance, and knowing my mom was in the front..... and screaming my head off...lol. Long story short, I broke both legs, my right hip, and my pelvis. I spent a long time in traction in the hospital, and then was sent home in a body cast! I got really good at dragging myself through the shag carpet in the living room :)
My poor mom would cry everytime I mentioned it, even when I got older. Poor Momma.
K, so remember my packratness? I kept the silly cast for 20 years... seriously...lol. I finally threw it away when Mike and I got married!

Oh my gosh, she must have been horrified! Thankfully it was only broken bones! Thanks so much for reminding me I should get rid of my daughter's cast too (only a broken arm one-lol)

Oh! you made me gasp when I read that! What a night mare! Are you a mom now? If not, you will truly get the feel of what your mom went through when you do become a mom. . . That pain that a child has to endure is excruciating! I'm so glad you lived to tell about it!

Oh boy, that is some adventure you had all those years ago. I know that when I was little I have sometimes wondered what would happen if the door would suddenly open when I was resting against it on long journeys, but I'm glad I never found out myself ...

ReplyDeleteIsn't it amazing we survived no carseats, no seatbelts, dodgeball, merry-go-rounds, see-saws and homemade baked goods at school birthday parties! And yes, I remember the Land of the Lost.
ReplyDeleteYour poor mom, I can't imagine watching my daughter fall out of a car. I can't laugh about saving your cast. I finally threw away my daughter's this summer. It was 20+ years old. For some reason, she didn't want it. She did admit to wondering what happened to it but not enough to keep it.

So glad you survived that terrible accident! Your poor mom! She must have been a nervous wreck during all of that! I remember the Land of the Lost. It's funny how when you go back and watch those shows now, they seem so dorky, haha. But at the time, they were the coolest! :)
ReplyDeleteWow! You were so lucky to go home period. Keeping the cast for 20 years is a little creepy, but we did do crazy things when we were young. I really hope I never have the need in using this little girl in a cast, but you never go. Thank you!!

ReplyDeleteWow! That's crazy! I always think it's weird that many cars didn't even *have* seatbelts in them. Mom told me my baby seat wasn't even attached to anything because our car didn't. It was essentially a restraint to keep your kid from crawling all over the place, not to save them in a crash. Wow!
ReplyDeleteThis was especially delightful to read since my friend's son JUST got out of a spica body cast. Then they thought he broke it again, but fortunately they were able to put it in a splint for a week. :D
